2020 PROGRAM PLANNING ~ Saturday, January 25 ~ 9am - 1pm ~ IBEW (2000 Airport Way)

New format for Program Planning this year.  Come at 9:00 to meet new members and socialize with fellow League members. Then stay for Progam planning beginning at 10:00 for our local League, make recommendations to the Alaska statewide League leadership and review what the national League is taking on. This is your chance for input to guide LWV Tanana Valley over the coming major election year.

BE AN ACTIVE PART OF LEAGUE - WE NEED YOUR THOUGHTS & IDEAS

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM PLANNING

The purpose of Program Planning is to discuss where League should put its energies. The basic flow is:

  • We formulate recommendations for BOTH the LWV Alaska (for statewide issues) and the LWV Tanana Valley (for local activities).

  • These recommendations are presented to the LWVTV members for review.

  • The LWVTV Board receives and reviews the recommendations from the Progam Planning meeting and any member input, and makes final recommendations.
    • The final recommendations to the LWVAK must be delivered to the State Board in time for them to be published to the general membership at least 30 days before the Annual Convention.

    • The final recommendations to the LWVTV must be presented to the LWVTV members at least 30 days before the LWVTV Annual Meeting.
  • We discuss any requests from the national organization (LWVUS) and determine if there is anything LWVTV wishes to move forward to the LWVUS.

LWVUS Request for Concurrence on new Voter Representation / Electoral Systems Position

The League of Women Voters currently does not have a position. Our Mission, our Principles (“We believe in Representative Government”) and our trademark “Making Democracy Work” all speak to empowering voters through representation.

When voters are denied representation because of where they live, the way district lines are drawn, or because they are an ethnic or political minority, apathy shouldn’t be a surprise. The purpose of having this position is to provide a clear, but flexible base of principles, for evaluating electoral systems that empower voters (language is from 14 State LWV positions). The electoral systems we use can enhance or deny representation of voters just as how, and who draws district lines, can do the same.

2018 Program Planning

Our Program Planning Meeting was held on January 27, 2018 at the IBEW Multipurpose Room on Airport Way. Fifteen - twenty members attended as we went through the business of examining our state and local positions, discussing our ongoing activities and prioirities and offering new ideas. We have also been asked to respond to LWVUS on advancing towards a more direct election of the president.

An online poll was offered to all our members to gather more input and guidance prior to submitting our final recommendations to the state board (for state issues) and our local membership (for local issues and activities). Final recommendations were delivered to the State Board on  February 27.

2017 Program Planning

2017 State Program Planning

We held our annual Program Planning meeting to formulate our recommendations to the LWVAK Board on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at the Noel Wien Library Auditorium. About 35 members and prospective new members turned out for a lively discussion of state positions and to recommend retaining, revieiwing or revising each of the current positions. We also recommended that the LWVAK take on re-districting for study in the coming year.

Following the meeting, LWVTV offered an online poll to all members to gather addtional ideas and guidance. The LWVTV Board met on February 13 and forwarded the final recommendations on February 17. See the February Voter for LWVTV recommendations.

2017 Tanana Valley Program Planning

About 20 members gathered on March 25, 2017, at Raven Landing to review our current positions and activities, make recommendations, and discuss new ideas for 2017 - 2018.

A summary and an online poll were presented to the Tanana Valley membership to gather additional input from those who could not attend the meeting. The final recommendations were provided to the membership on April 20.
